Definitions

Description

A high level of a certain type of fat, known as triglycerides, in the blood.

Overview

Elevated triglycerides may contribute to pancreatitis or hardening of the arteries. This increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease.

Symptoms

Having elevated triglycerides most often has no symptoms.

Treatments

Weight loss, a healthy diet, exercise and restricting alcohol are recommended. Treatment to reduce levels may include fish oil, vitamin B-3 (niacin) or other medicines.
