Decreased vision in one eye due to problems with visual development.

Overview

Lazy eye, also called amblyopia, usually occurs in early childhood. It happens when nerve pathways between the brain and an eye aren't properly stimulated. This causes the brain to favor the other eye.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a wandering eye, eyes that may not appear to work together or poor depth perception. Rarely, both eyes can be affected.

Treatments

Treatment includes eye patches, glasses or contact lenses, and drops. Sometimes surgery is needed.
