Bleeding from the small intestine, large intestine, rectum or anus.
Overview
Causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding include constipation, hemorrhoids and cancer. Massive bleeding can be dangerous. Small amounts of bleeding over time may lead to conditions such as anemia.
Symptoms
Lower gastrointestinal bleeding can appear as blood in the stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Blood may appear dark maroon to bright red.
