Melasma

Description

A skin condition that causes discolored patches on the face. It's also called the mask of pregnancy.

Overview

Melasma can be due to hormonal changes during pregnancy or from sun exposure. It is more common in people with brown or Black skin.

Symptoms

The discolored patches of melasma appear most often on the cheeks and forehead. They may appear tan or brown, depending on the color of your skin.

Treatments

Melasma often fades on its own after pregnancy or when a person stops taking birth control pills. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and skin-lightening creams can help if melasma lasts longer.
