Overview
In primary ovarian insufficiency, the ovaries don't make typical amounts of the hormone estrogen or release eggs regularly. Infertility is common, though it is possible for a person with this condition to get pregnant. This condition used to be called premature ovarian failure.
Symptoms
Symptoms include irregular periods, hot flashes and irritability.
Treatments
Treatment includes hormone therapy and supplements to help prevent osteoporosis. In vitro fertilization using donor eggs may be an option for treating infertility.
