Rectal prolapse

Definitions

Overview

Rectal prolapse typically happens in older women, but it can happen in men and women of any age. Risk factors include multiple births and vaginal delivery.

Symptoms

Rectal prolapse can make it hard to control bowel movements, causing stool to leak from the rectum.

Treatments

Early treatment includes fluids, fiber, suppositories and pelvic floor exercises. Most people eventually need surgery.
