Description

An infection of the skin caused by bacteria or by a fungus, virus, or parasite.

Overview

Viruses cause warts. Fungi cause athlete's foot and ringworm. Parasites cause scabies. Bacteria cause cellulitis, impetigo, and many other skin sores.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include itchiness, inflamed skin, and pain. Some infections cause blisters that drain pus or fluid.

Treatments

Some skin infections can be life-threatening. Treatments include medicated creams and antibiotics, depending on the cause.
