Slate gray nevus

A large, flat birthmark that can range in color from deep brown to slate gray or blue-black.

Overview

A slate gray nevus is a large, flat birthmark that may be mistaken for a bruise. The color can range from deep brown to slate gray or blue-black. It's more common in Black, Native American, Hispanic and Asian babies than in white babies. It also is called congenital dermal melanocytosis and formerly called Mongolian spot.

Symptoms

A slate gray nevus usually appears on the lower back, buttocks or shoulders.

Treatments

A slate gray nevus tends to fade during early childhood and needs no treatment.
