Uremia

Definitions

Description

A condition that involves very high levels of waste products in the blood.

Overview

Uremia happens when the kidneys no longer filter blood as they should, such as with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure. Uremia can be life-threatening without treatment.

Symptoms

Uremia symptoms can include extreme tiredness, upset stomach, loss of appetite, confusion and breath that may have a fishy odor.

Treatments

Uremia treatments include a procedure called dialysis, which filters the blood when the kidneys no longer can. Or transplant surgery can replace a damaged kidney with a healthy donated one.
