ADA Names Dr. Eric Johnson as 2018 Primary Care Advisory Chair

Grand Forks, N.D. – The American Diabetes Association named Dr. Eric Johnson, a family medicine physician at Altru Health System, as Primary Care Advisory Group Chair for a 3-year term beginning this month. In his role, Dr. Johnson will lead the association’s efforts to develop strategies to engage primary care providers. Because these health care professionals treat a majority of patients with diabetes, it is important that they are knowledgeable about the changes and advances in diabetes care.

Dr. Johnson’s work with the American Diabetes Association, which started in 1992, has made an impact through several initiatives, including the national Diabetes Is Primary program. The one-day program highlights recommendations that are essential for primary care providers. Dr. Johnson also assisted in developing the association’s abridged version of the Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, which serves as the global standard for the management of diabetes.

Dr. Johnson is the assistant medical director for the Altru Diabetes Center and specializes in serving patients with all types of diabetes. He is an associate professor, the director for the Interprofessional Educational Program, and the medical director of the Physician Assistant Program at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Johnson is the president of the American Diabetes Association North Dakota Affiliate, the president of Tobacco Free North Dakota, and hosts a call-in medical radio show on Wednesday mornings.
