Altru Nurse Recognized for Exceptional Care and Compassion

Posted OnNovember 12, 2025

Altru is proud to recognize Paige Carlson, a registered nurse at Altru Hospital, as the latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Paige was nominated by one of her patients for the exceptional care and compassion she provided during their recovery from a stroke.

In the heartfelt nomination, the patient shared, “From the moment she entered my room, she brought a bright, yet calming, presence that helped ease my fears. She spoke to me with such kindness, always explaining what was happening and listening patiently when I had questions or concerns. She never made me feel rushed or like I was a burden.”

The patient went on to say, “What stood out most about her was her genuine compassion. She didn’t just care for me, she cared about me. It was clear that nursing is more than a job to her; it’s a calling. Her warmth, professionalism, kindness, and dedication made a lasting impact not only on me and my family but on my spirit.”

Mikayla Klinke, manager of Patient Care and Paige’s leader, praised Paige’s commitment to her patients saying, “Paige consistently exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond for her patients. Her compassion, empathy, and sense of humor bring comfort and joy to everyone for whom she cares.”

This is not the first time Paige’s dedication has been recognized. In 2024, she received Altru’s Difference Maker award after being nominated by a coworker for her positivity and teamwork.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known, but not uncommon, auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
