Dehydration

Definitions

Description

Dehydration occurs when the body uses or loses more fluid than it takes in. Then the body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to do its usual work.

Self-care

To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids and eat foods that hold water, such as fruits and vegetables. Don't drink fluids that have caffeine or a lot of sugar as they can be dehydrating.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek medical care immediately for:

  • Dizziness or confusion.
  • Extreme thirst.
  • Lack of urination.
  • No tears when crying.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • Unable to keep fluids down.
  • Serious diarrhea or vomiting.
  • No wet diaper for three hours in infants.
