SOS Approach to Feeding

The SOS Approach to Feeding is a unique pediatric feeding program based on the work of psychologist Dr. Kay Toomey, PhD. It is designed to assist children and their caregivers who are experiencing difficulties with feeding. Home programming is essential to the success of this approach. At Altru Pediatric Therapy we work closely with families to provide home programming to manage their challenges of their child’s specific needs as it relates to feeding.

The SOS approach can improve or increase a child’s:

  • Overreactions at mealtime
  • Ability to gain weight
  • Oral motor skills
  • Willingness to interact or try new foods
  • Transition to the next stage of foods

Sleep Well Program

Through our Sleep Well Program, we will evaluate your child’s current sleep situation along with what is appropriate for your child’s developmental age. This program will focus on the unique and individualized family needs of the parent as well as the desired family goal. We will provide a customized sleep plan to include education on implementing safe sleep practices, nursery or bedroom recommendations for healthy sleep and any resources for future sleep-related concerns. Our goal is to help build a great little sleeper so your whole family can thrive!

Do you know an infant/child who struggles with any of the following:

  • Does your infant or toddler struggle with sleep?
  • Does your infant or toddler struggle with staying asleep or falling asleep?
  • Does your infant or toddler wake up for longer periods at night?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, our sleep well program is here to help you.

Pediatric Incontinence Therapy

Our pediatric team utilizes a unique approach by providing coordinated evaluation and treatment with an occupational therapist and physical therapist, both specifically trained in pediatric incontinence. This approach allows our therapy team to address both the gross motor and sensory components related to pediatric incontinence for child ages 4 and up.

An occupational therapist specializes in providing education and treatment to help children gain a positive sense of self, increase body awareness, regulate emotions related to bathroom/toileting routines, gain independence in ADL’s and hygiene, and address any underlying sensory processing difficulties related to toileting.

Do you know a child who struggles with any of the following:

  • Does your child wet the bed?
  • Does your child struggle with constipation?
  • Does your child have daytime leaks or increased need to go?
  • Does your child have toilet training resistance?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, our therapy team can help.

Therapeutic Listening

Therapeutic Listening is a sound-based approach that incorporates whole-body, sensory integrative treatments across various environments. The music used in Therapeutic Listening gives the listener unique and precisely controlled sensory information, with the music electronically modified to highlight the parts of the sound spectrum that naturally capture attention and activate body movement.

Handwriting Without Tears

Handwriting Without Tears assists in building a handwriting foundation that is key to literacy success. By learning to write letters, children build the skills necessary for reading and writing they will use throughout their lives. Handwriting Without Tears offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum, including opportunities for child to write with clear purpose and use of critical thinking. This approach uses multisensory materials which suit the reading and developmental interest of children.

  • Does your child struggle to form letters?
  • Does your child often push too hard or too soft when writing?
