Speech-Language Pathology

Altru's speech-language pathologists treat adults and children with a variety of disorders. Speech-language pathologists treat disorders that affect the entire communication system, including the brain, mouth, voice box (larynx), and sometimes the lungs. We treat problems with speaking, using language, swallowing, voice, and cognitive problems with memory, attention, problem-solving and executive function. With locations in Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the region, our speech-language pathologists offer acute care and rehabilitation services for patients of all ages and diagnoses.

What to Expect

Referral

To receive speech and language therapy, you must first be referred by a physician. It could be your primary care doctor or a specialist you are seeing.

Evaluation

During your initial visit, the speech-language pathologist will evaluate your condition. This involves reviewing your health history, doing an exam or evaluation, determining how you could benefit from speech-language pathologist services, outlining treatment goals and developing a plan. Evaluations may include things like examining your mouth, listening to your speech and voice, observing you eat, or pencil and paper activities to learn how you think.

Progress

The quality and speed of your recovery depend largely on you and your diagnosis. The time and effort you invest in your therapy program will help you enjoy the best possible outcome. Home practice is an important part of most therapy programs. Your speech-language pathologist will maintain a careful record of your progress and periodically re-evaluate your condition. You are encouraged to ask questions and openly discuss problems.
