PGY1 Pharmacy Residents
Michael Omvig
What inspired you to choose your current residency program?
I chose to pursue a residency at Altru because of the immediate sense of community that I felt when completing one of my IPPE rotations with the pharmacy team. Each person I worked with had a genuine passion for their work and a true desire to protect the patients they serve. The team's willingness to answer my questions and offer thoughtful, constructive guidance made my rotation experience with them truly impactful. I quickly realized that this was exactly the kind of work environment I had always hoped to find myself in. I am excited to continue building on my foundational knowledge throughout this year and am looking forward to becoming part of a team with values so similar to my own.
What are your career aspirations after completing your residency?
My goal after residency is to continue practicing as a hospital pharmacist. I'm drawn to the complexity that comes with inpatient care and find the day-to-day challenges associated with hospital pharmacy practice to be both informative and highly rewarding. Beyond clinical practice, I've always had a passion for teaching, and I hope to give back to the profession by taking on a preceptor role for pharmacy students in the future.

What inspired you to choose your current residency program?
I was drawn by Altru Health System because of its well-rounded residency program with good clinical training, supportive preceptors, and opportunities to care for a diverse patient population. During my APPE rotation with the ambulatory care team at Altru, I experienced a welcoming and team-based environment. I also saw strong teamwork among the healthcare team in providing good patient care. This experience confirmed that Altru is the right place for me to grow my clinical skills as a pharmacist.
What are your career aspirations after completing your residency?
My long-term aspiration is to become a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist specializing in chronic disease management. I am passionate about building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients and help them achieve better control of their chronic conditions through evidence-based medication management, patient education, and shared decision-making.
