Student Opportunities

Altru Health System is proud to provide a variety of career exploration opportunities to students in our community. Each year, Altru offers more than 10,000 clinical hours to students in advance practice programs, provides clinical placement to more than 400 undergraduate students, and welcomes more than 300 volunteers in a variety of healthcare settings.

Career Observation
Our career observation program is designed as a shadow/hands-off experience to observe a day in the life and day-to-day operations of various careers in our health system. The program is typically 2-4 hours of experience.

To apply for Career Observation:

  1. You must be at least 16+ years of age.
  2. Review the Career Observation Orientation Packet.
  3. Complete the Career Observation Application and submit to CareerObservation@altru.org.

Opportunities offered at Altru: 

  • SIM-ND offers various simulation experiences both at Altru and throughout the community. Examples of simulations include mass casualty event, code blue and birth.
  • School to Career Internships are internships specifically designed for high school students to enter the healthcare career field during summer break. Applications for available School to Career Internships open on March 1st. Visit our careers page to find available internship opportunities.

  • Junior Volunteer Program allows high school students to gain healthcare career experience by volunteering throughout our organization. Visit the volunteer page for more information about this program.
  • The Scrubs Camp provides an exciting and immersive experience for students interested in healthcare careers. Through engaging, hands-on activities led by industry experts, participants explore various medical professions, including nursing, radiology, CRNA, physical and occupational therapy, and surgical scrub technology. A case study showcases how different healthcare professionals collaborate to provide patient care. Students also receive an exclusive tour of the surgical department and gain valuable insights into career pathways. This camp is a great opportunity to spark interest in the medical field and learn how to start preparing for a future in healthcare. Learn more and register for the next Scrubs Camp.

Post-Secondary School Students

Opportunities offered at Altru:

  • Summer in Medicine and Rural Medicine Internships these internships may be available for current med students. Students should work with their school coordinator to identify opportunities and submit a request following our student placement guidelines. Requirements

A current academic affiliation agreement must exist between Altru Health System and the school’s program for placement to be considered. Once the application is received, the Altru Clinical Education office will communicate on the applicant’s behalf. Students must adhere to Altru policies throughout their placement. This includes but is not limited to completion of annual education modules.

Student Placement Process

Advance Practice Provider

Deadline for Applications:

  • Fall Semester: May 1
  • Spring Semester: September 1
  • Summer Semester: February 1
  1. The student’s school coordinator/program representative will submit application via the Altru Student Portal.
  2. Altru Clinical Education may request additional information while processing the request. All communication will be done via email.
  3. Students will be notified via email of their application status by the following dates.
    1. Fall Semester: May 30
    2. Spring Semester: September 30
    3. Summer Semester: February 28
  4. Students must inform Altru Clinical Education of their acceptance/denial of their approved placement by the following dates. Failure to communicate with Altru Clinical Education by the below deadline will be an assumed denial, and the approved placement will be withdrawn.
    1. Fall Semester: July 1
    2. Spring Semester: November 1
    3. Summer Semester: April 1
  5. School coordinator/program representative will receive communication regarding orientation compliance upon acceptance of the application.
  6. Student will receive information regarding login credentials and orientation compliance upon acceptance of the application.

Undergraduate or Other Students

Student information must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to clinical start date. 

  1. The student’s school coordinator/program representative will submit application via the Altru Student Portal.
  2. School coordinator/program representative will receive communication regarding orientation compliance upon acceptance of the application.
  3. Student will receive information regarding login credentials and orientation compliance upon acceptance of the application.

Vaccine Information
All students completing a clinical experience at Altru Health System must adhere to the required vaccine policy. The flu vaccine is required if a student is participating in any clinical beginning August through April.

Vaccine Exemption
Students who wish to be exempt from the seasonal influenza and/or COVID-19 vaccine requirements must have an Altru approved exemption two weeks from their clinical start date, as submitted in Altru Student Portal.
