Ultrasound

A pregnancy ultrasound is a vital imaging test that monitors the health of your baby while in the womb. The tests use high-frequency sound waves to check how far along a pregnancy is, show a baby’s development and screen for potential problems. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) consider ultrasound imaging to be safe for pregnant women and unborn babies, as long as a qualified healthcare professional performs the exam.

Altru Health System offers 3D and 4D ultrasounds as an elective and nonmedical service for patients 26–34 weeks pregnant who have already had their 20-week screening. The 30-minute service costs $150. Patients will have the option to receive the ultrasound images via text message or email (excludes Devils Lake). The ultrasound department at Altru is accredited by the American College of Radiology in all areas of ultrasound.

Baby Ultrasound Visits By Week

Depending on your stage of pregnancy or health-risk level, your physician may recommend one of the following ultrasounds:

  • First trimester ultrasounds. Your physician may schedule a first-trimester ultrasound if you are experiencing bleeding or pain. A first-trimester ultrasound may also be scheduled if you have a history of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy or need infertility treatment.
  • 18–22 weeks. During a second-trimester ultrasound, your provider will examine the fetal development, growth, anatomy, placenta and amniotic fluid. Your provider can also inform you of the sex of your baby if desired.
  • 26–34 week ultrasound. At Altru, patients can choose to have a 3D or 4D ultrasound in their final trimester. There is an out-of-pocket fee for this elective service.

What is a 3D Ultrasound?

A three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound generates high-quality images of a fetus. The 3D images appear more lifelike than images from a traditional ultrasound exam and help you see a baby’s facial features and maybe fingers and toes. Your provider may order a 3D ultrasound to look for developmental defects, cleft lip or other abnormalities.

What is a 4D Ultrasound?

A four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound is similar to a 3D ultrasound, but it also lets you see your baby in motion.
